THE PROCESS OF 3D SCANNING

The process of 3D scanning can take a variety of downstream deliverables, whether it be a triangulated (STL) file for 3D printing or fully reverse engineered component exported into native CAD designs systems such Solidworks, Siemens Nx, Creo PTC and Autodesk Inventor. Over 20 years of 3d scanning experience means the team at Europac3d can meet the challenge of most 3D scanning jobs.

Point Cloud

The quickest and easiest format to produce. Point cloud output is ideal for those customers who are accustomed to 3D data and have their own software for post processing. Depending on the scanner used, the point cloud can expect to be many millions of XYZ points that define an objects 3d shape.

Polygonal Mesh

A polygonal mesh is typically a 3D object comprising of triangles that make up its 3d surface. Sometimes known as an STL file which can be directly 3d printed or milled by 3d manufacturing software.

Rapid Surface Model

It is sometimes necessary to create a 3D CAD model as quickly as possible in order to get the object into the 3D environment as a ‘spatial’ or ‘packaging’ model. A Nurbs surface can be rapidly generated laying a network of four sided patches over a mesh and exported as IGEs or STEP files.

Parametric Solid Model

Using scan data as a reference it is possible to create parametric CAD models as if designed in your native CAD system. Design intent can be analysed and adjusted to create a ‘perfect’ model from ‘imperfect’ real world parts. This method is particularly useful for the end process of:

  • Manufacture of legacy parts or components without 3D designs
  • Creating 2D drawings
  • Use in all major CAD systems including, Catia, Solidworks, PTC Creo, Siemens NX and Autodesk Inventor
  • 3d printing for production
  • Component assemblies
